I've found great inspiration and comfort in these books as I trot down that long, looooong road toward becoming published.

Non-Fiction
Technical Favorites

Techniques of the Selling Writer by Dwight Swain
Techniques of the Selling Writer

Characters & Viewpoint by Orson Scott Card
Characters & Viewpoint
by Orson Scott Card

I really should have a third book listed here to balance out the symmetry of the page, but I can't find another book that equals Mr. Swain's TECHNIQUES or Mr. Card's CHARACTERS (this book is worth it for the viewpoint chapters alone.)

Some folks who don't 'get' Dwight Swain like Scene and Structure by Jack Bickham, Mr. Swain's former protege' .

Of the hundreds of technique books I own, I learned (and continue to learn) from the two books pictured above. Mr. Swain's book is so full of information, I read it very slowly to digest each rich morsel. Beginners, don't be discouraged by it's complexities. Use Mr. Card's book first then come back to Mr. Swain's as you gain experience.
